In Memory of Dr. Edward A. Shelly
In loving memory of Dr. Edward A. Shelly (1948-2023)
Edward Allen Shelly, 75, of Walnutport, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in the company of family. Son of the late Nevin and Lorraine (Frederick) Shelly of Emmaus, Edward knew from a young age that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He spent his youth helping tend to his family’s farm, participating in 4-H, and later competing in track and field as a long jumper at Emmaus High School and Kutztown University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He continued his education at Wilkes College with his master’s in microbiology culminating in his acceptance to The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, proudly graduating with honors in 1976.
Edward worked for nearly 10 years as a veterinarian in Emmaus and at Maple Hills Veterinary Hospital in Allentown before moving to Palmerton to open Little Gap Animal Hospital in 1984. In 1990 he acquired Blue Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Walnutport. Although partially retired, he remained active at both locations until the time of his passing. They will continue to serve the surrounding communities under his son. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association for over 40 years, the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, and a founding member of Valley Central Emergency Clinic in Fullerton.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially from his boat on the Atlantic. Later in life, he was a successful competitive sporting clays shooter. He held a black belt in karate and golfed for many years, even making his own golf clubs for himself and others. At home, he always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed cooking. Cape May, NJ and Anticosti Island in Canada held a special place in his heart. Above all, Edward was a devoted father. He adored his children and grandchildren and was always a positive force in their lives. He will be remembered as a generous man who was thoughtful and always reliable.
Survivors: Edward is survived by his children, daughter Kristen (Shelly) Molter wife of Guillaume Molter of Mansfield, MA, son Benjamin J. Shelly, VMD of Kunkletown, and their mother Theria (George) Shelly; sister Darlene Shelly of Benton; two grandchildren Zoe Molter and Leo Molter; friend Marianna Chryst.
